1 Monday

Goals:

  • identify intervals, both generic size and specific quality using the bottom note major scale method
  • spell intervals above a note by modifying from the major scale of the bottom note

Note: For HW due Monday, they MUST read pp. 121-122 to make class makes sense today

  1. go over homework to check a few trickier intervals
  2. Quality of intervals
    a. Specifying a quality of a generic size of interval
    i. compare C-E vs. C-Eb (what scales do those belong to?)
ii. compare C Major to its parallel minor, C minor—show difference between ^3, 6, 7
iii. show intervals above ^1 in both C major and C minor
iv. highlight Perfect intervals; they are perfect because of music history and harmonic series; if you’re interested in the details come to office hours/tutoring to discuss that nuance/why
    1. create a list of Imperfect (M/m) and a list of Perfect (P) intervals
    2. but there’s a RIVER OF FIRE AND DEATH BETWEEN M/m and P INTERVALS—P WILL NEVER BE M/m!!!!!!
      b. do try-it No. 3
      i. generic size
ii. major scale of bottom note
  3. Construct the size diagrams: d-m-M-A and d-P-A
  4. ID and spelling Steps
    a. generic size first, then quality
    b. ID quality based off of major scale of bottom note; if fits, then it’s M/P
    i. If needed, adjust to get desired interval
ii. use the terms LARGER or SMALLER, not “sharp/flatten” or “raise/lower”, since it will depend on which note we modify whether we raise or lower a note to make the interval smaller.
iii. if bottom note doesn’t have a Major scale, think of one that does
    iv. ID then spell intervals
    c. DO NOT COUNT HALF STEPS
    d. Students practice: complete part of each line in Try-it #3 in class

Homework for Wednesday:

The rest of try-it #3
Wkbk 6.2 (I.A and II.A maybe odds only, maybe only odds of first two lines of each?)
