Review key signatures (speed quiz?##musictheory.net drill) and start Compound Meter

Goals:

• Memorize major key signatures
• Identify keys from musical excerpts
• Perform and notate basic rhythms in compound meter
• Identify and notate meter signatures

Lesson Plan:

1. (make the scales stuff as efficient as possible) if you ran out of time on anything from Friday, start there
a. go over homework
b. Continue in Berkowitz, ID-ing tendency tones and their resolutions, etc.
c. Spelling and ID key signatures speed quiz: maybe this?
2. Mention the pentatonic scale just as a passing conversation
3. Compound Meter:
a. compare simple and compound through listening first--use this playlist (all compound--pull a couple simple meter for contrast from W2 Playlist)
b. introduce like you did simple meter, finding beat (walking tempo that is slow/med/fast), then meter (duple, triple), then division (sing both du-de vs. du-da-di and see which fits better)
c. Show simple vs. compound beat and division with lines (not beaming etc. at first)
ask them to name each meter: 1. simple vs. compound and 2. duple vs. triple Then, group the 3 divisions together with a beam, ask what duration gets the beat
4. Make a chart:
Simple Compound
division in 2s in 3s
beat (write rather than spell) quarter/half/etc dotted-quarter/dotted-half, etc
beaming 2 divisions beamed together
4 subdivisions beamed together 3 divisions beamed together
6 subdivisions beamed together
meter signature beats/meas→ x
duration of beat→ y divisions/meas→ x
duration of division→ y
top number to expect 2, 3, 4 6, 9, 12 (because 3 divisions per beat x number of beats)
1. simple vs. compound (show difference in beat value, beaming, and what the parts of the meter are)
2. Emphasize that compound meter shows the divisions/measure, NOT beats per measure
3. Complete part of Try-it #1 p. 73-74 in class, the rest on their own
4. Syllables that they will use in ear training are du-da-di’s on p. 76
