Monday
Goals:
- construct minor scales via parallel and relative relationships to major
- create and ID key signatures of minor keys
- Circle of fifths for minor
Lesson Plan
- Major Key signature quiz https://www.dropbox.com/s/dovn5tck392jzol/Theory%201_M%20keys%20Quiz_ALL.pdf?dl=0
- Begin minor scales; natural form only, but teach both relative and parallel relationships
a. the book examples are great. (Pg 90, Schubert)
- Show parallel first—how ^3, ^6, ^7 lower in relationship to parallel major
a. Start with the Schubert for parallel first
b. play the examples; have them describe the different qualities of the two excerpts
c. write EM and Em on the board next to each other and compare--which scale degrees are different
d. show half steps between ^2-3 and ^6-5; these are the very expressive intervals of minor
- Use this altering the parallel major to construct minor scales, then pull out accidentals to create key signatures
a. use the worksheet we will assign for homework
- To introduce relative relationships, sing quick major scales, then drop to “la”, then sing minor scales quickly up and down. Then sing on note names—C-d-e-f-etc. up and down; a-b-c-d-e etc. Up and down. Do this in several different keys
a. Then Corelli example - book
b. practice finding relative minor from majors:
- Major key signature
- sing down to la (half +whole)
- that’s your tonic
- Ways to learn/calculate—parallel relationship you add 3 flats/subtract 3 sharps; relative think solfege—do-ti-la–3 note names (counting all), 3 half steps (starting at do=0)
- Chant minor circle of fifths, both ways (down through flats or up through sharps). They can also come up with a saying to help them remember—possible group activity?
Homework for Wednesday:
- spelling natural minor scales and creating key signatures--use this worksheet;
- have them pull the key signature out from the notes and write to the right side, and note which parallel or relative minor scales are theoretically possible, but are more practical when you think enharmonically (e.g. the parallel minor of Cb Major would hypothetically be 10 flats, with Ebb, Abb, and Bbb, which is just annoying. It exists in “the magical theory land” but is not practical, so we don’t worry about it on the Co5)
